Defence optronics: a rapidly evolving strategic sector
Optronics, which combines optics and electronics, has become a key element of defence and internal security technologies. In France, Europe and worldwide, this sector is undergoing significant transformations, driven by technological innovations and recent strategic initiatives.
France invests in specialised training
The French Ministry of the Interior has recently launched trials aimed at integrating advanced optronic technologies into public security systems. For example, until 31 March 2025, an experiment was conducted to test the real-time use of algorithms combined with traditional video surveillance systems. These “augmented cameras” were designed to automatically detect risk situations, such as unusual crowd movements or abandoned objects, in order to improve law enforcement responsiveness while respecting public freedoms.
Europe promotes cooperation in optronics
At the European level, the European Defence Agency (EDA) coordinates initiatives such as CapTech Optronics, which brings together experts to share information and collaborate on joint projects. This collaborative approach aims to strengthen Europe’s strategic autonomy in defence.
Global outlook and challenges ahead
Globally, the defence optronics market is booming, stimulated by the growing demand for advanced surveillance and targeting systems. However, this growth comes with challenges, particularly in terms of cybersecurity and protection against emerging threats. Industry players must therefore innovate continuously to maintain their technological advantage and ensure the security of optronic systems.
